The Next Generation
In 1946 Pappa
asked Ravjikaka to join him as a 50% partner in a new venture, a hardware
shop. At that time Ravjikaka was working at Karachiwala and had no capital.
Pappa loaned him 50,000sh and they became equal partners. Later in 1948
two separate shops were created: Doshi & Co. Ltd and Doshi & Co.
(Hardware) Ltd. Until then they were not limited companies. Motadaddy
started working when the Hardware shop was opened. In 1947 Ratikaka and
Natukaka came from India. Ratikaka joined the Hardware shop and Natukaka
(aged 18) the Timber shop.
In 1949 Daddy had
gone to India to study. He stayed at Prabhulalkakas house and he and Kundankaka
became fast friends. They had a lot of fun so had less time to study and
Daddy failed in the first year. Pappa asked him to join the business instead
of repeating the year. He was 18 when he joined the timber shop.
Pappa had lots of
friends and contacts in Nairobi because of the business and the insurance
clients that he had built up. By 1942 Nairobi had grown a lot and was
larger than Mombasa. A lot of shops and businesses catered to the needs
of the white settlers. Roads, however, were not too well developed and
railways were used to transport goods as well as passengers.
Babukaka and Vinodkaka
also worked in the Mombasa shop for a number of years. Vinodkaka’s
wife died in Mombasa and soon after that Babukaka left for good and settled
in Rajkot. Vinodkaka, after remarrying in India, came back to Mombasa
and managed Doshi & Co. Ltd. Babukaka set up a shop in Rajkot and
did well. He died in 1967.
