Starting the Business

Then Pappa felt that he should start up a business himself. He had some savings and he asked R. D. to join him in a venture. Even between them they did not have enough money so they asked Narbheram Mehta to be a partner. In 1930 the Timber shop was opened (where Electricals is at present). It was about the same time that Motadaddy was born.

In 1932 Pappa bought off R.D., who he felt was not so reliable due to his drinking habit. R.D. in turn persuaded Narbherambhai to ask to be paid off too, so that Pappa would have to close down the shop. Fortunately Pappa was able to ask Adda for some of the money and the rest was paid off gradually, so the business continued.

In 1935 Papa went to India and brought Adda and Motaba to Mombasa. He also asked Babukaka and Mansukhkaka to join the business in Mombasa, and Jikaka also joined at the same time.

In 1937 Pappa bought a plot of land and had the main house constructed on Ayub Khan Avenue in Mombasa. At first it was a bungalow. The foundation stone was laid by Adda on Akhatrij, the third day of Vaishakhmas. It rained – a good omen. At that time Adda and Motaba were doing Varsheetap. Incidentally on the day of their Parna it rained too!
