Charity Work

A Supplement - by Daddy

When Pappa started working at the Standard Bank of S. A. for 100sh per month, he had decided that from now onwards, whatever he earned, he should contribute 10% of his income to charity. He followed this principle throughout his life. He formed the M. J. Doshi Charitable Trust in Kenya where 10% of shares were attributed to charity and dividends from these shares went to the trust. This money was given to various charities in Kenya. When income increased from Uganda and Tanzania, he transferred a further 5% of shares to charity. Pappa further formed another overseas trust, C. M. Doshi Charitable Trust after Motadaddy’s death.

The principle of CHARITY was so deep in his heart that he made his sons and daughter adopt this principle in their lives and which has carried on since.

When Pappa retired he worked out total income from balance sheets of investments and gave a figure for charity which was 10% of income. This was spent in the following year and the new charity figure was worked out by him every year. When he died on 15th July 1983, he had some balance sheets in his papers and his “working” for the charity figure.

Pappa had a lot of compassion and he could not bear to see anyone who was suffering physically, mentally or psychologically. He extended his help to all needy in India and East Africa. He told his sons a saying which translates thus:

“Anybody can be satisfied with a good meal, but he who cannot wipe the tears of a hungry person is not a human being.”
