Some Extra Insights

Pappa was quite liberal when it came to womens issues. Motaba wanted the ladies to have “Laaj” or to cover their heads, but after Motaba passed away the “Bahus” could talk to Pappa and did not have to cover their heads. All the women learnt how to drive, but it was up to them how much they used this skill!

Ba and Pappa were very devoted to each other and other than business trips Pappa never went anywhere without Ba and visa versa. When Pappa was 60 he decided that he did not want to work full time any more so he became semi-retired. For a long time he would go to the office for a couple hours a day, wherever he was.

Ba and Pappa were very fond of Hindi films. They went regularly, mainly to the Drive-in on Sunday and Monday evenings taking interested grandchildren with them. When Pappa and Ba came to Kampala in 1972, Pappa insisted that Ajay and I should accompany them to see “Anand”. That was a time when we were not very interested in Hindi films! Later on when cinemas were in decline in the age of videos, Ba and Pappa watched videos at home. In his younger days, Pappa must have gone with Adda to see Natak and then progressed to silent movies and later the Talkies and the motion pictures of today.

In his younger days Papa played cricket – he was a good bowler. Later he played Bridge at Navnat but never with money. His mode of dress was always a white suit (but no tie, he had worn them for long enough when working at the Bank).
