Bombay

Pappa was totally against the buying and selling of property as a business for the simple reason that there is no effort in it as compared with other ways of making a living. In December 1972 when Daddy and Kumarkaka were in India the Grand Paradi flats were being built in Bombay. The brothers saw them and liked them so Kumarkaka suggested that the family should buy a flat there. Pappa felt that it was a waste of money and wrote to Daddy accordingly. Both Motamummy and Mummy were very keen on the idea as they had no close family in Bombay. Pappa felt that the men were being influenced by the ladies, but eventually he relented and we did the “koombh” ceremony in 1975. When Sheilla got married in 1978 Pappa and Ba stayed at the flat for the first time and liked it there. After that Pappa wanted to go to India every winter! Whenever they went they stayed for a few months and Faiba and Fua stayed with them to make sure Ba and Pappa were O.K. and all was well.

When Nilesh got married, Kamufaiba came for the wedding but due to other commitments, Motafua could not attend, so when Fua eventually arrived a few days after the wedding, Pappa told him off! Fua good naturedly apologised to Pappa for not attending the marriage!

Another incident that Daddy remembers well was when Pappa needed to have his prostrate removed. At first he was upset about having a catheter put in as he could not pray. He suggested to Fua that he should ask Maharajsaheb for permission to pray, which was granted but Pappa was still unhappy. There was a delay in getting the right surgeon to operate as Pappa had a heart condition and it would be better if a local anaesthetic was used for the surgery. Pappa grabbed Daddy and Fua and said “Do you think I am enjoying this? I am in Narak!” Then he refused to speak to Motafua and Kashimasi who had specially come to visit him. Happily after the operation was successfully done he was fine!
