New Shores Explored
We came to
U.K. on 25th September 1972. Unfortunately Pappa had taken baadha that
he would not visit any country which did not have a Deraser and he never
came to UK, not even for our wedding.
Meanwhile the Tanzanian
government had nationalised all businesses and so we were not doing well
and in 1973-4 both the shops (in Tanga and in Dar-es-salaam) were closed
down and Kundankaka came to Nairobi.
In 1973 Kubach and
Sambrook was started with Sammy in England. The steel cutting and shearing
in Mombasa was started by Kumarkaka in 1974-5.
On a trip to India
in 1976, Bakulbhai, suggested that we should visit Muscat where he was
managing Muscat Pharmacy. A visa was sent and Daddy and Mummy went to
see the country. There was a lot of potential and businesses were thriving
(oil prices were hiked up in 1974). Daddy wrote to Pappa with suggestions.
Pappa at first said that there was no need to start a new venture in the
Middle East but was then persuaded by Kumarkaka and Daddy and a shop was
opened in 1977 with Quais Zawawi as a partner, as legally, all foreign
businesses had to have a local partner. Narendrabhai went from London.
In 1979 business improved and it did very well until 1989. Faibas Nileshbhai
also worked for Oman Hardware for a few years.
In about 1978 Kumarkaka
suggested that we should start manufacturing in Kenya but Pappa was totally
against the idea. He didn’t take kindly to the concept of borrowing
from banks. The brothers finally convinced him.
