Family Joys and Sorrows

A few weeks after Kumarkakas wedding, Masa was coming home on his bicycle when he had a stroke. Apparently he had been suffering from high blood pressure but he had not told anyone. He was in coma for about 10 days and then passed away. He was in his 50s.

In 1967-8 a shop was opened in Dar-es-salaam but was not very successful.

In March 1968 Ashwinkaka and Indirakaki got married. Kamufaiba, Fua and Bhanuben came from India for the wedding. The Jaan went by train from Mombasa to Kampala and a good time was had by all – it was a lot of fun! Even Ashwinkaka and Kaki travelled back with us on the same train, though we were in 2nd class and they were in 1st class carriages!

In 1968 Daddy got a permit to stay in Kampala for 3 years so after Subhashkakas wedding in December 1968, Ajay and I went to stay in Kampala with Mummy and Daddy.

In 1971 Chitrabhanu came to E. Africa. Pappa was instrumental in calling him over and went everywhere with Chitrabhanu. For all his faults, Chitrabhanu brought awareness of what Jainism actually is to the Jains of E. Africa. When Pappa found out that Chitrabhanu had had relations with someone (and later married her) Pappa was very upset. Chitrabhanu had allowed everyone to call him “Maharaj” when he had broken his vow of celibacy.
