In 1959 a new venture was started in Mombasa selling crockery and housewares on Kilindini Road. Kundankaka, Shirishbhai and Naginbhai ran that shop. Kundankaka had come to Kenya in 1955 as an “imported Jamai” as Jyotsnakaki was from Nairobi. This shop was not very successful but one of our customers, Balfour Beatty (who constructed Hydro-Electric Power Stations in East Africa) suggested that we should open a similar shop in Tanga as they were opening a plant nearby. In 1962 Doshi Hardware (T) Ltd was opened in Tanga. At the beginning Kundankaka and Ramnikkaka went to Tanga and then Kundankaka and Daddy were there. Shirishbhai handled their requirements from the Mombasa shop. (Naginbhai went to the Kampala shop and later joined Kishorkaka in Hardware & Ironmongery). In Tanga the shop prospered thanks to the custom of Balfour Beatty. From 1963-1966 Daddy and Mummy stayed in Tanga with Kundankaka. Around Tanga there were lots of sisal, coffee and tea estates whose owners became good customers of the Tanga shop. Incidentally we had very enjoyable weekends away staying with these customers in their huge houses!

In 1964 there was a coup in Zanzibar and that affected the mainland but the Tanga shop was fine. In the years from 1961 to 1963 Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania became independent but that had no effect on the business. However after the Zanzibar, coup the family thought that one of the brothers should leave and start something away from E. Africa. Motadaddy went and started an oil can factory in Bangalore after Kumarkakas wedding in December 1964. This venture was not very successful and Motadaddy, Motamummy and Sanjay came back in 1967.
